Messiah on the Frigidaire - Need Men!

WE NEED MEN!!! But all roles are still available for audition.  If you are a bit older, or younger that the range listed for Dwayne, Larry, Lou Ann, or Betsy, but can pass for 30’s to 40’s… we need you!  We also need a young actor up to as old as 14, if he hasn’t had a growth spurt and still looks like a boy, not a young man J

St. Peter’s Players is holding a third night of auditions for Messiah on the Frigidaire on Tuesday October 18th, 7pm at 903 – 75th Ave SW (St. Peter’s Anglican Church)

"The small town of Elroy, South Carolina is thrust into the evangelical spotlight, when what seems to be the image of Jesus appears on a refrigerator in a trailer park. The discovery by Lou Ann Hightower, her husband Dwayne, and her best friend Betsy, sets into motion a frenzy of conflict, communion and good old fashioned commerce. When the National Investigator turns the appearance into front page headlines, their trailer park becomes a mecca for miracle seekers, soul searchers and disciples with a decidedly political agenda. At the urging of the towns business leaders, Betsy pretends to get messages from the appliance-based apparition, and the crowds multiply like loaves and fishes. Through the ordeal, the three undergo an evolution in their relationships with each other, and they are forced to come to grips with their lowly status in the caste system of the rural south. In a region where religion is as much a part of life as grits and cotton fields, God surely moves in mysterious ways."

Cast of Characters

Lou Ann Hightower: An attractive woman. 30's to 40's. Southern beauty, but no belle.

Dwayne Hightower: A man in his 30's to 40's. Still handsome, but life has taken its toll.

Betsy Gridley: An attractive woman 30's to 40's. Though her better days are behind her, she still enjoys flaunting her sexuality.

Reverend Cecil Hodges: A man in his 50's-60's. Pious preacher at Elroy First Baptist Church.

Larry Williamson: A man in his 30's to 40's. The balding cocky and condescending City Councilman.

Woman: Mother in her mid 30's to early 40's.

Boy: Blind nine-year-old.

Stranger: The mysterious man, or woman, perhaps in their late 40's or 50's, but could be almost any age

Casting Note: Lou Ann, Dwayne, Betsy and Larry all went to high school together, so it should be believable that they are the same age.

Auditions will be by group read. Please choose the night that works best for you. There is no need to come on both nights

MONOLOGUE STYLE TWO-PART AUDITION WORKSHOP

Hello,

The 2016-17 theatre season is definitely well underway so now is a great time to work on your audition skills.  In order to help you with this, we are offering two different FREE audition workshops.  The workshops will be led by Jane MacFarlane, Chris Stockton and myself.

MONOLOGUE STYLE TWO-PART AUDITION WORKSHOP
Dates:  part one on Mon Oct 24/16 and part two on Mon Nov 28/16, 1:00pm until 6:00pm both days

This two-part workshop is aimed to help you choose monologues that show you in the best possible way as well as reinforce basic audition practices such as how to submit, how to dress, how to present yourself in general.  In Part One, you will come in with three contrasting 2 minute monologues chosen by you (which you will READ – memorization and “acting” are NOT encouraged) and we will discuss how everyone’s options may or may not be the best choices and why.  We will also discuss “Audition 101” information – the Dos and Don’ts that will help you put your best foot forward.  In Part Two we will do a practice run of an audition situation where you present (with memorization and “acting”) at least one of your monologues and receive redirection as you would in an actual audition – as well as feedback on any Dos and Don’ts that come up.

*You must be available for both parts of this workshop.

To sign up, email me at smcnairreid@theatrecalgary.com with the subject line “Two-part audition workshop”.  Space is limited so first come, first served.  Once you are registered, I will give you more information on what to prepare.

SHOW SPECIFIC AUDITION WORKSHOP
Date:  Mon Feb 13/17 from 2:00pm until 6:00pm

This workshop is for the type of audition where you are provided sides and are reading for a specific role in a specific show.  You will be provided sides as if it was an actual audition and be asked to come in as you would in a real situation and then we will work with you and give feedback.  We will cover topics such as how to submit, how to dress, and how to prepare your sides as well as what the expectations are from our side of the table.

I am not accepting registration yet for this one as it is months away but I wanted to let everyone know that we have listened to requests and have scheduled this type of workshop.  I will email again when I am ready to sign people up.

Thanks,
SMR
