Volunteer Audience Needed - The Troupe

Hey Rogues Folk -- Jason Long here.

Wicked short notice and I'm not sure if any of your students might be interestedin some background work(volunteer) but thought I'd check in:

For our comedy pilot The Troupe we're needing as many bodies/BG performers aswe can get out to Loose Moose Theatre tomorrow 1-5 pm. (Hopefully more like 1-4but for sure not later than 5.)

We just need an audience to enter the theatre, give us some close up laughs,group shots of a standing ovation, we're out.

If you think there's Rogues folks who might like the experience, will be a funset time, you can pass along my email & I can forward their info to ourproduction co-ordinator.

Also will need a few more #'s at a different location on Sunday as well.

Company of Rogues Emerge Auditions

On Thursday, February 23rd, the Faculty of Company ofRogues Actor's Studio will be auditioning actors who want to be considered forthe 2012 Emerge Auditions. The Emerge Auditions are for actors graduatingfrom full-time programs and is a forum for their work to be seen by Calgary andEdmonton based theatre companies and agents. Candidates' work should be readyto be seen by the professional community--i.e. on par with the grads of Mt.Royal and U.of C. If you are in doubt about your standing, please askyour instructor.

In past years, the faculty has consulted then chosenthree actors to send--last year our candidates were Brittany Marshall, AlexisLerigny and Shane McLean. This year, we have 4 slots to fill potentially andare implementing this new audition process. Potential actors should havecompleted the Masterclass Program, or have studied with us consistently over aperiod of time: 1-2 years or more. The Emerge Auditions are in April, so actorsselected will still have time to polish their work for Emerge. However, theymust have two pieces they are working on to show us and their program ofmonologues has to be determined by March 16. Actors must also be willing toappear at both the Calgary and Edmonton auditions

Actors should prepare two contrasting monologues of 2minutes (or less) each. Both monologues can be contemporary/modern, or mayinclude one Shakespeare. We suggest you only perform Shakespeare if it's anarea in which you are strong.

Rogues Emerge Auditions: February 23; 6:30pm. Auditionswill be booked in 10 minute intervals to allow for some direction to be given.Meisner students will be permitted to leave class for their audition

The session may be extended if there is a demand. Thiswould necessitate an earlier start time, since we must submit our candidates’names by 4pm on February 24. Ifthis is important to you we hope you will clear your schedule to attend.

Auditions for HeritagePark’s Summer Street Theatre Program

Make a little historyof your own at Heritage Park!

Heritage Park is looking for character interpreters fortheir spring/summer street theatre program. Become part of the team of actorspresenting scripted and historically based vignettes through a variety oftheatrical forms in which specific, identifiable characters are portrayed inpre-1914 Western Canada. Many of the vignettes are performed outside.Improvised interaction between vignettes is required. This summer’s vignettesfeature the creation of the Calgary Public Library, a crime story, a weddingand a sports day. There is also a western musical in the Opera House featuringthe creation of The Calgary Stampede.

Successful candidateswill have post-secondary drama training and some previous acting experience.Equivalences will be considered. Requirements include proven performance skillsin acting, excellent verbal communication and public relations skills, and theability to imaginatively develop and physically project a character.Familiarity with historical interpretation is considered an asset.

Rehearsals begin Monday April 23rd, 2012. Rehearsals run Mondayto Friday (9:30am to 5:00pm) until the park opens on May 19th. Actors are thenassigned two consistent weekdays off during the summer. Actors must beavailable to work five (5) days per week including weekends from May 19ththrough to the end of the contract which is Monday September 3rd, 2012.

Children of War:

Tower (Male, 18-30): A man with a troubled past. He grew up in thecorrectional facility, but deep down his heart is in the right place and heseeks peace above all else. Determined, leader type, the true hero that thechildren depend on. (Baritone-Tenor)

The Old Man (Male, 35-99): A wise composer who brings humanity back into thelives of the scattered children. Peaceful man of Faith, with many lessons toteach to the audience. (Baritone)

Hushy (Child,7-11):The youngest but bravest among the children. An abandonedlittle boy (girls will be considered), with a great hope that tomorrow will bebetter. Not afraid of danger, believing in the goodness of people.(Singingpart)

Foppy (Male, 14-28): A confused young man who has trouble adapting to apeaceful way of life. Deep down he is good, but often comes off as a negativecharacter throughout the play. (Baritone/Tenor but must be able to singin falsetto and be ok with crossdressing)

The Uniform (Male, 20-45): cold hearted soldier, the ultimate antagonist ofthe play. He believes in justice without reason. (Singing optional)

Freckles (Boy, 10-15): Older but smaller boy (girl may be consiered), another correctional facility child, with a haunted past,one of the key membersof the group. (Tenor/Alto)

Pumpkin (Girl, 7-12): A little girl from a French ambassador's family. Asymbol of purity and innocence even through the harshest times.(Mezzo-Soprano/Soprano)

Professor (Boy, 9-13):Pumpkin's brother, a walking-talking dictionary(Nerdy). Singing part (Must be able to speak with a French accent)

Gent (Boy, 7-14): Part of the gang, a dreamer, no individual talking partsbut sings part of a duet.

Cheapo (Boy, 12-16): A significant member of the gang, feisty, several ofthe children look up to him. (girls may be considered for the part) Mainly aspoken role but does sing with the group.

Hick (Boy, 13-18, Tall): A boy damaged by war, nevertheless strong andbrave.Mainly a spoken role but does sing with the group.

Soldier (Male, 20-99): Acts as a minor setback on the children's journey,comic character. (singing optional)

Teacher (Male, 20-99): Older, wiser character, wanting peace but choosing tohave more of a spectator seat in the war. Singing optional as part of theensemble.

Chauffeur (Male, 20-99): The Uniform's right hand. A negative characterthrough most of the play, but at the end chooses to side with the others.Singing optional as part of the ensemble.

Wanderers (Children and teens, 6-25): The children journeying through Warravaged Europe. Singing required.

Europeans:Ensemble of any age or gender, singing required.

Mowgli (14-25, male): Youthfuland eager to learn about the ways of the world. (tenor)

Asha (13-25, female): Abrave young lady that teaches Mowgli how to live amongst men. (soprano)

Bagheera (17-45, female): Ablack panther, “mother” and protector to Mowgli. (alto, mezzo)

Baloo (16-99, male orfemale): The wise old bear, Mowgli’s mentor and teacher. (baritone/alto)

Kaa: (14 -35, male orfemale): The great boa constrictor, must be a versatile actor (tenor, alto)

Shere-Khan (16-40, male): Athreatening tiger. Mowgli's lifelong enemy.(baritone/tenor)

On the eve of his 35th Birthday, William Fischer is forced to reevaluate himself after suffering a debilitating accident. Disaffected and trapped within his own skin, Fischer delves into the underworld of fringe science with the hope of finding a cure for his injuries. It is an odyssey which leads him to the mysterious Lin Valentine, a young woman with a disturbed history. Meanwhile, his loving wife Ingrid watches helplessly as the man she married is slowly consumed by the obsession to reconcile himself with the very nature of existence.

TRANSCENDENCE is a poignant speculative drama that challenges us to consider whether technology can fundamentally change what it means to be human. In the tradition of introspective science-fiction such as NEVER LET ME GO, GATTACA and MOON, TRANSCENDENCE is a return to modestly-scaled cerebral filmmaking in a genre now defined by special-effects sequences.

TRANSCENDENCE is the feature-length debut for Writer-Director Thomas Robert Lee.

Scientist – 40-60:

Nonspecific. Well spoken, with strong voice. The scientist drives thestory ahead. Must be convincing when speaking about medical topics; he mustalso look credible enough to develop a vaccine without the use of technology.The Scientist has spent the majority of the past two years working onpreventative measures against this virus mankind has ever known; chasing onetheory in particular, he looks for this trait in every test subject heencounters. The scientist is the most important character in the story.

Jay Holland – 30-35

Blonde hair, blue eyes. Jay is married to Wife and is the older brotherof Jennifer Holland. A devoted husband, there is nothing Jay would not do forhis wife. His relationship with Jennifer, while close, is strained at times dueto Jennifer’s history of acting without considering the consequences. He doesnot have children. Jennifer is his only sibling.

Jennifer Holland -25-30

Blonde hair, blue eyes. Jennifer is the younger sister of Jay. Jenniferis a strong person who has always done what she wanted and this has often beenat the expense of her relationship with her brother. She has recently battledthrough utter chaos to reunite with her remaining family and may also beinfected with the virus that is plaguing humanity. She knows that she needs tobe tested for infection, along with her sister in-law, Wife who was infectedafter Jen.

Wife, 25-35

Nonspecific. Wife is the sister in-law to Jennifer Holland and spouseof Jay Holland. She has been completely devoted to Jay for their entirerelationship and considers Jennifer more than a sister in-law. In Jennifer shehas always seen what she wants to be, but never had the courage to try. She hasrecently been infected with this virus, but after Jennifer and it is clearlytaking its toll on her body. She has discussed final preparations with herhusband should one of them be infected, and plans to hold him to his promise.

Liam, 25-30

Nonspecific. Liam was considered a nerd in life before the plague. Hespent his days reading survival books for things that did not exist, along asthose that did; he played survival horror video games; and watched sportsreligiously. His activities before the outbreak honed his problem solvingskills, hand-eye coordination, and survival skills; his love of sport taughthim how to operate in a team environment. He approaches all situationscautiously, and only fully trusts his best and only friend, Josh. The two spendtheir days roaming the land, looking for food and supplies to increase theirchances of survival. They spend their nights sleeping in shifts in order tominimize the risk of being caught off guard

Josh, 25-30

CAST. Josh holds a past similar to Liam. The two met at work andinstantly connected with their love for horror films and video games. Josh isnot quite as cautious as Liam, but has a healthy respect for the constant,unrelenting threat that has become their life. They spend their days asbrothers-in-arms, scouring the land for food and supplies in order to make itthrough another day. They spend their nights sleeping in shifts in order tominimize the risk of being caught off guard

Happy New Year! From allof us at Theatre Alberta, here’s wishing you and your loved ones a fabulous2012!

Plans for Artstrek 2012,Theatre Alberta’s annual summer theatre school for teens, are well underwayhere in the Theatre Alberta office. We're very excited about the 2012 programand look forward to welcoming both new and returning faces to Red Deer Collegethis July.

We are writing toclarify the dates for this summer's Artstrek. Initially we had hoped that the2012 program could be extended into a three-week format, so to include a highernumber of students in order to meet increasing demand. However, the space wasnot available this year for Theatre Alberta to run the extended program.

Theatre Alberta and RedDeer College worked closely to try to find a way to make extended programpossible, but we were unable to do so without undermining the quality of theArtstrek experience for some participants. In order to ensure that all studentsreceive the same opportunity for the best possible experience this summer, wedecided to preserve the two-week format for one final year. We do apologize forany inconvenience this may cause for families who were anticipating athree-week program.

We are happy to announcethat Theatre Alberta and Red Deer College have committed to extend Artstrekinto a three-week program beginning in July 2013. The space has been booked andthe dotted line has been signed!

We are also pleased toshare with you the selected play for Artstrek 2012: Shakespeare’s Romeo andJuliet. The dates for Artstrek 2012 have been confirmed and will be:

• EXPLORATIONI: July 8 – 14 (for students aged 13 – 15 years*)

• EXPLORATIONII: July 15 – 22 (for students aged 16 – 18 years**)

*Students who are 12 buthave completed grade seven will be considered for admission to Exploration I.

Front Row Centre Players will be holding auditions for Gypsyfrom February 8 – 10, 2012 from 6:30 – 10:00pm. Callbacks will be held on Sunday, February 12 from 1:00 – 4:00pm. Audition Details: Auditioners are asked to prepare an up-tempo musical theatre song thatshowcases their vocal abilities. Acappella song auditions will not be considered. Please bring the sheet music or backing tracks for your song. Auditioners are asked to come in comfortableattire to move in. Each auditioner willbe asked to perform a short choreographed dance in their audition time slotwhich will be provided by the choreographer.

Gypsy will be performed at the Pumphouse Theatres fromMay 25 to June 9. Rehearsals will beheld at the Community Arts Centre, 2633 Hochwald Avenue SW, starting February16 and will run up until the show opens on May 25. Rehearsals will be on Tuesday and Thursdaynights from 7:00pm to 10:00pm and Sunday afternoons from 1-4pm.

Synopsis: Gypsy is based on the story of how LouiseHovick rises from behind her little sister's shadow, Dainty June, and becomesthe 1930's burlesque queen, Gypsy Rose Lee. While the title suggests that this musical is about the famous stripperGypsy Rose Lee, it is really more about her hard-driven and determined stagemother, Mama Rose. In the beginning,Rose concentrates on her talented younger daughter, June, whom makes it on vaudevillebut soon tires of being cute, marries, and runs off. Rose, determined to fulfill her Broadwaydreams, turns to her less obviously talented daughter, Louise. Louise eventually does become"Gypsy", and Rose is left by herself, her aspirations for her kidsrealized, but her own show-business aspirations still unrealized.

Note: All main/support/chorus characters must be able toharmonize.

Mamma Rose - Lead (F), age range – 35-45 years, voicetype - alto The playwright describes this character as the 'musical theatrefemale equivalent of King Lear'. Rose is quintessential stage mother and athree time divorcee single mother of two. Mamma is charming, ambitious and ruthless. Need a strong actor/singer whocan move and command the stage. Ability to demonstrate a huge emotional rangeis a must.

Baby June - Featured (F), age range - 7-10 years, voicetype -belt The All-American 'blond hair, blue eyed' girl. Baby June is a combination of Shirley Templecuteness and talent and Rachel Barry stage presence. This little bundle of dynamite is Rose’syoungest daughter and is the star in Roses vaudeville act. Ability to do the splits, high kicks,cartwheels, tap/jazz dance and baton twirling is an asset. Baby June must be able to belt out a song.

Young Louise - Featured (F), age range - 9-12 years,voice type - ability to sing in tune.

This mousy, shy and meek little girl is Rose’s oldestdaughter. She lives in the shadow of herprettier, talented and favoured sister, June. Young Louise lacks self esteemand self confidence. She finds solitude in books and poetry. She is constantly competing for her mother’sadmiration and recognition. Basic Jazzdance ability required.

Herbie - Lead (M), age range - young 35+, voice type -baritone Herbie is a single ex-talent agent turned candy salesman. He is a truegentleman with a heart of gold and a soft spot for children. He is charismatic,caring, compassionate and genuine. Herbie avoids confrontation and thereforeinternalizes his real emotions. He often hides his angst by smokingcigarettes. This character requires asolid actor with a good emotional range and basic dance ability.

Dainty June - Support (F), age range - 16-25 years, voicetype - alto Abilities as per Baby June (please read above). The character now loathes her Shirley Templecuteness and has developed the determination of Rachel Barry. Trapped in the perpetual Baby June 'act',June longs to actually be the young woman she has become. Ability to belt out a song and master a danceroutine required. Actor needs todemonstrate emotional aspects of the character’s rebellion and resentment.

Louise/Gypsy Rose Lee- Support (F), age range - 18-25years, voice type – mezzo-soprano Character requires ability to emote andphysically transform from mousy and meek Young Louise, into the burlesque'Queen of the Striptease', Miss Gypsy Rose Lee. Actress must demonstrate ability to belt and whisper her song, havestrong jazz dance ability, musicality, a sense of humour, be able to ad-libdialogue, command the stage and control the audience. Louise is seductive andwitty. Be prepared to show your figure.

Tulsa (plus Pastey/Phil) Featured Support (M), agerange-18-25 years, voice type - Tenor This talented 'triple threat' characterexudes charisma and charm. Tulsa is a dreamer who wears his heart on his sleeveand supports his friends emotionally. While he falls for Dainty June, Louise isfalling for him. Ability to demonstrateemotional nuances and mime is an asset.

Tessie Tura (plus stage mother) Featured (F), age range -40 +, voice type - belt Tessie is an aged burlesque stripper who dances withfinesse. With her Texas twang, this former ballerina displays a less thanfinesse persona. Tessie takes Louise under her wing and helps navigate Louisethrough her burlesque debut. Comedic timing, an annoying spoken voice, basicdance and ballet (to a mild extent) required. Be prepared to show your figure.

Mazeppa (plus stage mother) Featured (F), age range -40+, voice type -alto Mazeppa is a big, bold and brassy bugle-playing burlesquestripper. She is the Nemesis of Tessie. She has a threatening “hard as nails” exterior and a voice made of gravel.Mazeppa has a bugle and she's not afraid to use it! Must play the bugle andhave basic dance skills. Be prepared toshow your figure.

Electra (plus Miss Cratchitt) Featured (F), age range-35+, voice type - belt She is a light-headed, whimsical burlesquestripper. Forever in an inebriatedstate, Electra literally has her “lights on” but nobodies home. Be prepared toshow your figure.

Uncle Jocko/Mr.Kringelein/Bourgeron-Cochon(plus othersmall roles) Featured (M), age range - 35+ Uncle Jocko is the vaudeville masterof ceremonies. Mr.Kringelein is HotelManager in Akron. 1. Reception

Receive and direct visitors by phone and in person (customer service)

Open the front doors at the start of the business day
Inform staff of visitors and appointments

Be accountable for the balancing of daily box office receipts

With the Executive Director – coordinate class schedules, locations and staffing of educational programming
With the Executive Director and Technical Director – coordinate The One Act Play Festival and any other Pumphouse productions
Process Drama Class registrations and payments, charitable donations, tax receipts and memberships
Ensure the office is equipped with appropriate supplies.
Assist in the coordination of publicity for Drama Classes and the One Act Play Festival
Produce the Pumphouse Playbill and other promotional materials.
Update the Pumphouse Theatre website
Perform other duties as assigned for the professional and efficient management of the Box Office and Pumphouse Theatres Society

The acting students will be performing a “scene” thatmy writers have written. The scene will be rehearsed with the writer,then performed and if time the scene will be rehearsed again (with changes) andperformed.

STRUCTURE IS THE ESSENCE OF SCREENWRITING AND THE FUNDAMENTALTOOL IN A GOOD SCREENPLAY. BUILDING THE CLOTHESLINE TO HANG YOURSCREENPLAY ON IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES, BUT ALSO THE MOST REWARDINGWHEN YOU GET IT RIGHT. IT WILL SAVE YOUINNUMERABLE DRAFTS, GIVE YOU A SKELETON TO BUILD FROM, AND ENSURE YOURCHARACTERS HAVE STRONG INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL GOALS AND THAT THEIR DESIRES ANDPASSIONS ARE THE CENTRE OF YOUR SCREENPLAY.

Structure encompasses, external action, inner and outercharacter goals and arcs, thematic structure, A & B subplots or multiplesubplots and visual images/ metaphors structured into your screenplay. It is the layers of the screenplay that givethe screenplay depth, but it starts first with laying the groundwork of themain external A structure and character goals and arcs.

Aboutthe Instructor Wendy Hill-Tout has produced, executive produced, written anddirected over 30 films, including Into the West with executive producer StevenSpielberg, nominated for 16 Emmy's, Undercover Christmas for CBS which swept theratings with 18M viewers, Goose on the Loose, a feature starring Chevy Chase,the Perfect Man, a feature, winner of Best Screenwriting, Best Drama, ShatteredDreams, a documentary nominated for Best Documentary and Best Direction, at theAcademy of Canadian Film and Television, No Place To Go, winner of a ColumbusAward and San Francisco Award for Best Documentary, among many others. She has studied with many industryprofessionals and story editors including Michael Hauge (Writing Screenplaysthat Sell), Robert McGee, Lew Hunter (head UCLA screenwriting), Sid Field andothers.
