Downstage's In the Wake returns in a new version following it's World Premiere run in April 2010. Even after the critical and audience success of that run, 4 Betty Mitchell Award nominations and the Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding New Play, the Downstage Creation Ensemble still wasn't completely satisfied. The run at the High Performance Rodeo will be the Premiere of the new In the Wake; 15 minutes longer, and with many script and technical improvements. This darkly comic and highly physical performance explores the complex dilemmas of ocean health, geo-engineering and eco-terrorism.

Whether you saw the show the first time around or not, you won't want to miss the definitive edition of In the Wake at the High Performance Rodeo. There are only 4 performances, so get your tickets now. Visit https://www.hprodeo.ca/2011/in-the-wake for more info on the show or to purchase tickets.

Synopsis: An oxygen-deprived dead zone is devastating the marine life off Canada’s west coast, and fisherman Jack Travail is feeling the impact. Frustrated by ineffectual union reps, stymied by government inaction, Jack is desperate for a way to restore his livelihood. Enter Charlotte Wallace, a scientist whose unconventional research has the potential to bring life back to the ocean. When her discovery goes public, she finds herself enmeshed in Jack’s struggle and the pair must decide if radical problems demand radical action.

In the Wake features Ellen Close, Col Cseke, Nicola Elson & Braden Griffiths, with an original score composed & performed live by Ethan Cole, design by Anton deGroot and direction by Simon Mallett.

"In the Wake is a mesmerizing experience that should not be missed."

Archetype Productions presents:

Interruptions

To be produced at:

The Calgary Region One-Act Play Festival, March 16-18, 2011 (Performance date TBA); and
The Calgary International Fringe Festival, July 29-August 6, 2011 (Performance dates TBA)

The Play:

The death of a child during pregnancy or at birth is often a silent loss. Many people do not acknowledge that the unborn baby was “really” a baby and minimize the significance of the death. Bereaved parents are often hurried to recover and return to normal as soon as possible. Failure to bring a baby to a full-term, healthy birth leaves parents with feelings of failure, shame and inadequacy. The resulting grief places great pressure on a couples’ relationship and can end friendships and strain family connections when insensitive comments are made or support is not there. This play is structured as a series of monologues each featuring a character who has been touched by the loss of a baby, an event that occurs more often than most of us realize. It highlights each character’s struggle to understand and grieve his or her loss and eventually come to a place of acceptance, healing and hope. While the subject matter is serious, there is much warmth and humour in the piece. It received a staged reading at Sage Theatre’s 2010 IGNITE! festival.

We are seeking female actors who can play ages 20’s to 40’s and a male actor who can play late teens and 40’s. Actors will be cast in two speaking roles. Actors must be able to commit to both productions.
We are also seeking persons to fill the positions of stage manager and lighting/sound design/technician.

Rehearsals begin the week of January 23, 2011 and will be scheduled during weekday and weekend days and evenings, to maximize the mutual convenience of cast and crew while affording flexibility.

Between January 23 and March 15, 2011 (in preparation for the One-Act Festival), actors can expect to rehearse 3 times weekly but will not be required to attend each rehearsal in its entirety.

Between March 19 and July 28, 2011 (in preparation for the Calgary Fringe), actors will be required to attend 1-2 rehearsals per week, to remain on top of the material, with the occasional extra rehearsal added as the festival approaches. (This will allow actors to potentially pursue other projects during the late spring.)

Audition Dates:

Saturday January 15, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Sunday January 16, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Monday January 17, 2011 from 8:00-9:00 p.m. (those unable to attend earlier/Callbacks as
needed)

Audition Location: Morpheus Theatre Rehearsal space at the Community Arts Centre (Old Currie Barracks; see morpheustheatre.ca for map))
