Energy - it heats our homes and cooks our food, but how do we reconcile our feelings about this commodity when it’s extracted, processed and shipped right through our neighbourhoods? The longstanding relationship between a rural community and an energy company is put to the test as plans for a new sour gas pipeline unfold.

Good Fences is a brand new show from the creators of the award-winning In the Wake, winner of the 2010 Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding New Play. This thought-provoking new work delves into the relationship between two of Alberta’s most critical industries - agriculture and oil & gas.

Stick around for the post-show discussion that follows most performances to engage in some interesting dialogue about the show with members of the creative team.

The Downstage Creation Ensemble's Good Fences is created by Ethan Cole, Ellen Close, Col Cseke, Nicola Elson, Anton deGroot, Braden Griffiths and Simon Mallett, with dramaturgy by Vicki Stroich.

"Downstage Creation Ensemble brings such honesty, curiosity, good faith, and high spirits to this highly entertaining and thought-provoking project. I'm looking forward to the conversations about this one."

PROJECT 1 – Sasha Krioutchkova

“I Thought You Were a… [insert label here]” is a short stylized film about heartbreak as catalyst in the human struggle to break free. Which is a fancy way of saying: please check out http://krioutchkova.tumblr.com/ for details, and contact sashak_ask@hotmail.com with questions.

I’m looking for two actors/dancers of two different genders. It is important for the performers to have experience in both realms, as there will be lots of playing with movement and imagined spaces (e.g. leaning on an invisible wall, expressing emotion through dance, etc.) in addition to standard narrative acting.

Please come ready to cold-play with the words and motions that will be described in the script. Resume and headshot are recommended.

PROJECT 2 – Matt McKinney

Just Say It.
Project consists of a number of short comical and dramatic scenes depicting various ‘coming out’ situations. A strong focus on the idea that ‘coming out’ doesn’t happen just once, but occurs daily.
Looking for male and female actors of all ages.
Audition will consist of a cold-read and/or a contemporary monologue if you have one.

Matthew McKinney is a Calgary based actor and video-artist. He owns 2150 Creative, a small video production company. For more information visit:

THE CANADIAN BADLANDS PASSION PLAY is one of Canada's largest outdoor theatrical events. Now in its 19th season, the company annually depicts the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ in dramatic form. An epic story told on an epic scale, this year's production features a creative retelling of the Gospel of John.  The brand new script will be originated by a mixed professional/volunteer cast of approximately 200 actors in a 2700-seat outdoor amphitheater.

Seeking physically-able actors comfortable working with live animals and performing outdoors in a large-scale production.

Jesus  understudy (male, 33 years old): The rightful heir to the created world arrives on earth to find his creation does not recognize him. As he seeks to restore an ancient kingdom, he must confront the cultural power sources of his time and the age-old human condition. Stage combat experience essential.

Volunteer Roles Available – The Canadian Badlands Passion Play relies on it’s amazing group of volunteer actors to make the Passion Play happen. You can be part of the show as a volunteer actor with a speaking or non-speaking role. Nearly every character featured in the Gospel of John is present in out new script.

The volunteer speaking roles include a number of prominent Pharisees (Dark Pharisee, Nicodemus, Joseph of A, Abner), several disciples (John, Peter, Philip, Nathanael), the Lazarus family (Mary, Martha, Lazarus), Jesus' family (Mother, brother James and family), Pilate, Herod, John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, the Adulterous Woman, the Samaritan Woman, several key healings (man at pool of Bethesda, man born blind), and a number of key crowd speaking roles. There are big scenes in and around the temple in which the Jewish feasts are celebrated. Many of these have opportunities for featured roles, dances and singing.  There is a large wedding scene (Miracle at Cana) that involves similar crowd roles, as well as the feeding of the 5,000, triumphal entry, via, and crucifixion. As of now, every actor participates in the finale of the play.  We need lots of teachers of the law this year.
