Neutral Mask - taught by Aaron Coates

Neutral Mask
July 22 - August 7, 2013 (Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 - 8:30 pm)

Instructor: Aaron Coates

Would you like to make your performances more physically dynamic? Are you interested in playing characters far from your own type? In this workshop, students will use the Neutral Mask to discover greater freedom in performance, to learn what real presence is all about, and to use your body to its full potential as a storytelling tool. The work will begin with a discovery of the habits, unconscious mannerisms, and accidental movements that we often don’t recognize as we perform.  After discovering a “neutral state”, we will then examine how you create characters with clear and specific qualities. We will examine extreme movement and minute movement, making this class suitable for performance on stage or screen.

Aaron Coates is an actor, director, playwright, teacher, and the co-artistic director of Trepan Theatre.  He studied acting at Mount Royal College in Calgary and at Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris. With Trepan, a company known for outrageous physical comedy, he has created and performed in SHE, Matadora, The Cat Lady Show, and La Mexicaine de Perforation.  Aaron has worked for many theatre companies in Calgary including Cowtown Opera Company, Lunchbox Theatre, Theatre Calgary, Ghost River Theatre, Vertigo Theatre, Calgary Opera, Quest Theatre, and Downstage.   His plays include: The End of the Rope, which has toured throughout Alberta and was shortlisted for the Writers Guild of Alberta Award for Drama; Tin Soldier, an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story, created in collaboration with UK-based Aitherios Theatre and performed in an Off-West End Theatre in London; and numerous short plays and monologues which have been performed in Canada, Australia, and England.  He is also a faculty member of Company of Rogues Actors’ Studio and co-artistic director of Calgary’s long-running “improvised soap opera” Dirty Laundry.

For more information, or to register for this class please call Company of Rogues at 403.228.5526 or email info@corogues.com.

June 21, 2013 - 2:00 pm & 7:30 pm

Rimers of Eldritch:
In the decaying Mid-Western town of Eldritch, dwell the ones who were left behind and those that made the choice to stay. These lost souls inhabit the landscape of Lanford Wilsons Bible Belt America, with its catchword morality ('virgin,'God-fearing') and the viciousness that lies beneath the pious surface. He senses the rhythm of its life and the cruelty it can impose. He understands the speech patterns of its loveless gossips, its sex-hungry boys, its compassionless preachers, its car-conscious youth, and the nasty little secrets that bubble beneath the quiet streets of Eldritch.

Master Class Program

The Company of Rogues Actor's Studio Master Class Program is a one-year full-time acting program. The program is intended to provide the student actor with an intense level of training under the highest caliber of professional instruction. Master Class consists of four primary streams of study: Scene Study, Meisner Technique, Acting for Film &Television, and Voice & Movement for the Actor.

Located on Calgary’s funky and exciting 17th Avenue Strip, Company of Rogues is deeply immersed in the vibrant theatre and film communities in both, Calgary, Alberta and Vancouver, B.C. Our actors are sought after by local/regional casting directors, filmmakers and theatre companies alike. Furthermore, at Rogues all of our instructors are working professionals who offer the highest quality of instruction and mentorship; providing career counseling and guidance beyond the term of the program. Our Studio Directors, Christianne Hirt and Joe-Norman Shaw are available to provide you with more detailed information through a Master Class Interview.

Actors interested in applying for the Master Class Program should contact the Studio to arrange an interview and to set up an audition. Our full-time program runs from early September to the end of June. Students are accepted into the program through the interview/audition process during the previous spring and early summer months (May - July). However, if enrollment permits we occasionally admit students at a later date.

Please submit either a head shot and resume or a photo with an accompanying letter of interest (detailing any previous experience) via e-mail (info@corogues.com) - Please include the subject heading “Master Class Audition/Interview” or in person at the Studio (2nd floor 1232 17th Ave SW). Upon receipt of your application we will arrange for an audition and interview with one of our studio directors.

Master Class Interviews
The Master Class interview process is dedicated to creating a program that is right for each actor, taking into consideration individual scheduling needs and previous acting experience. We also offer a customized payment plan and our flexible scheduling allows students to remain employed during their training period- a feature unique to our program. Beyond the one-year full-time program, actors will find opportunities to continue to train with us on a course-by-course or session-by-session basis for as long as they choose to call Company of Rogues their creative home.

Master Class Auditions
For new students applying to the Master Class Program you are required to audition for one of our studio directors. Auditions consist of the presentation of one contemporary monologue of your choice, two minutes in duration. The half-hour audition will consist of the presentation of your selected piece and a working session with our director. Please bring in a hard copy of your head shot and resume or photo and letter on interest to the audition.

We invite you to audit our classes and discover why Company of Rogues is the place to be.
