Morpheus Theatre is pleased to announce auditions for THE
PIRATES OF PENZANCE a Comic Operetta by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.
Frederick is celebrating his 21st year and, with it, the
end of his indenture to the Pirate King. Though a sense of duty has kept him
loyal to his friends, the pirates, with his freedom he has vowed to fight to
bring the pirates to justice. As he leaves the pirates to make his way in the
world he runs into the daughters and wards of the Major General. As he is discovering what these beautiful
creatures are, the pirates realize that Frederick is indentured until his 21st
birthday. As he was born on February 29th, he has actually only celebrated 4
birthdays, and is still in indentured for some time.
Will Frederick do his duty, against his better judgment,
and rejoin the pirates?
Will he join the police and bring the pirates to
justice? Will he ever see his 21st
birthday?
The answers to these questions, and others, are revealed
over the two acts of this deliciously comic Gilbert and Sullivan opera.

**ROLES**
MAJOR-GENERAL STANLEY: (M, baritone - Bflat2 to F4) Comic
role. Far braver and much more gallant in his own mind than he is in life. Some
movement.(He's not much of a dancer, either, though he might argue that).
THE PIRATE KING: (M, baritone - D3 to F4) Full of
bravado, he talks a great story, but is really very soft hearted where pirate
victims are concerned.
Especially orphan victims. Dance required.
SAMUEL: (M) his Lieutenant.
FREDERIC: (M, tenor - D3 to Bflat4) 21 year old (or able
to ply such) hero of the opera. He is constantly guided by his sense of duty.
Some dance required.
SERGEANT OF POLICE: (M, bass-baritone - G2 to E4) This is
a brave man, though he would rather not have the bravery tested, who leads a
band of not-so-brave police.
MABEL: (F, soprano - C4 to Dflat6) Frederick's
introduction to femininity, and the girl he intends to marry. Dancing required.
EDITH: (F) General Stanley's Daughter.
KATE: (F) General Stanley's Daughter.
ISABEL: (F) General Stanley's Daughter.
RUTH: (F, mezzo-soprano - G3 to F5) Frederick's nurse,
and only female with whom he has had contact over the years. Would like to have
Frederick for herself. Some dance.
Chorus of pirates, police, wards of the Major General.
There are several small parts that will be drawn from the chorus.
***Auditioners are asked to prepare a song from Gilbert and Sullivan (but not
from the Pirates of Penzance), or another opera that highlights their
proficiency in their area of interest, whether it be comic, dramatic or
romantic. Though monologues are not
required, a cold read may be
requested.***
The Read Through will be held on Monday December 9.
Rehearsals will be on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons
beginning January 11.
The show will move into the Victor Mitchell Theatre at
the Pumphouse Theatres on April 13, and run from April 19 to May 4.
