ROLES

PROFESSOR HINKLE is a magician and toy maker who is trying to make his fortune. He loves doing magic tricks but he is not very good. Things like pulling a mackerel out of his hat rather than a rabbit. _The performer needs to be able to do a variety of magic tricks some successful but some bad._

MARY HINKLE is Professor Hinkle's niece. She is an orphan her parents were killed in a car accident and lives with he uncle but he is too busy with his work to really pay much attention to her so she tries to find ways to make him notice her. She is jealous of Karen and tries to steal the snow seeds for her uncle so that he might be successful in the Santa Claus Spectacular.

JINGLE BELZ is one of Santa's favorite elves. He has a great personality and is the Ryan Seacrest of the North Pole. He is also the keeper of the snow seeds. He is good friends with Frosty. They met after that first year when Frosty came to the North Pole after being awakened by the magic hat. He introduced Frosty to the snow seeds, which help to keep him from melting when he is away from the cold of the North Pole. He is the announcer for the Santa Claus Spectacular.

KAREN JONES is the young girl who helped Frosty find his way to the North Pole. She is now a young woman who has big plans for her life but she does not have a lot of support. She wants to be a teacher and teach music but doesn't have the money to support herself and if she wins this contest will be able to put herself through school so that she can help others do what she has always wanted to do... sing. She thinks that Frosty is helping her be a better performer by sprinkling her with snow seeds... in reality she has lots of talent just not much confidence.

FROSTY THE SNOWMAN is a very happy soul, with a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal. He is everyone's friend and is always there to lend a hand. He is Karen's friend and is trying to support her in her performance. He knows she has lots of talent she just needs to find the confidence.

Note all performers have to be comfortable singing and being able to move (dance).

ROLES ARE NOT AGE SPECIFIC BUT ACTORS MUST BE OVER 18.

Non-Equity Production. Payment will be on a per show basis with an honorarium for the rehearsal period. In addition, cast and crew are given access to the Stage West buffet prior to each show.

Haunted Halloween - Actor's needed!

I have been approached about a sudden opportunity to stage a Haunted Halloween event at a local Calgary venue. In order to confirm the event, one variable is the number of actors available and interested. An honorarium will be paid to participants (but no, you won't get rich).

If the production goes ahead, roles will exist for between 5 and 20 spooky people. Characters will generally be in the realm of ghouls, goblins, ghosts, spirits, queens or kings of the damned, zombies and the like. Preference would be given to performers available for performances on each Friday and Saturday in October (that is, October 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31) and November 1. Performers will be expected to interact with patrons within a set scene and character, but will not generally be performing scripted lines. A small number (one or two) of roles for "evil buskers" may also be available. (Evil Buskers startle or amuse patrons outside of the set story, often with a physical skill or entertaining persona that is in keeping with a Halloween event.)

Please respond to me with any expression of interest to byron@hynes.ca.
Interested parties will be contacted with details late next week. You are welcome to forward this on to other Halloween enthusiasts outside of the community theatre community as well. General questions may also be addressed to me, but some details are not available until contracts are in place.

Thanks.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

All named roles will be 18 years of age or older. While age ranges have not been provided, we will be looking for individuals who are appropriate to the character. Accents will be determined based on who is cast.

DICK WHITTINGTON – Female. Our hero. A principal boy (yes, female) with all the traditional elements but not at all sappy. A very strong character obviously central to the plot.

THOMAS THE CAT – Male or Female. Dick’s faithful companion and thwarter of the King Rat. Not a sleek cat as in the Andrew Lloyd Webber style to look at. He/she is very vocal and actively involved. Needs to be played by someone with a flair for mime or charades.

MARIGOLD – Female. Baron Landscape’s daughter and Dick’s love interest. A principal girl with character. Beautiful and sassy.

BARON LANDSCAPE – Male. Big and blustery, he is Marigold’s father and London dignitary. He is very brave unless confronted.

DAME MAISIE LUVADUCK – Male. Baron Landscape’s cook and housekeeper.
Has several songs and all the usual Dame elements of jokes, patter with the audience and slapstick.

KING BUBONIC THE THIRD – Male. A very well educated and articulate villain. Plans world domination but it never quite comes off.

BRAT - Male (may be female if necessary). One of King Rat’s henchmen.
A very camp and pretty little rat.

DRAT – Male (may be female if necessary). King Rat’s other henchman.
Cockney ‘wide-boy’ character. A bit dense but thinks he is clever.

YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES - Male. Not yet fully formed into his adult character but still the ace detective. This character weaves his way through the story of Dick Whittington and reveals a twist in the tail.

VELMA WHITSUN – Female. Young Sherlock’s current faithful companion.
Velma is like the Scooby Doo character but not quite as bright, and has an American accent.

CAPTAIN ROGER ALBATROSS - Male. Captain Birdseye eat your heart out. The Dame’s love interest. A larger than life West Country character with accent to match.

QUEEN LOMPEBOM - Female. Queen of the all-female Cannibal tribe. This character has two songs and loads of funnies but only features in Act Two.

SPOON - Female. Queen of the Cannibals’ cook and sidekick. A smallish character part in Act 2.

MRS WHITTINGTON - Female. Dick’s mum. Reports him missing in the first act – may be doubled up with Spoon’s character.

CHORUS OF TOWNSFOLK, VILLAGE CHILDREN, MARKET TRADERS, COOKS, SAILORS & CANNIBALS

The Bone House

Hey Calgary theatre artists,

My name is Simon Mallett and I'm the Artistic Director of Downstage and I also work as a freelance director around town. In an effort to give Calgary theatregoers a terrifying Halloween experience and to work with some exciting new collaborators, I'm looking to mount a production of _THE BONE HOUSE_ this fall in the Motel Theatre in the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts. I'm seeking some passionate and enthusiastic theatre artists to come with me on this journey as we produce this spine-chilling play. If you might be interested, please read on!

The show will run in the MOTEL THEATRE FROM OCTOBER 21ST TO NOVEMBER 1ST, 2014, and for audiences, it promises to be one of the scariest experiences they'll ever have in a theatre. Part of the reason I'm doing this show is to get to work with people I haven't had the good fortune to work with before, and so I'm seeking some key team members right away and will be holding auditions to cast the show later in August. So what's the show about you ask? Well…

SHOW SYNOPSIS: Self-proclaimed mind hunter, Eugene Crowley, presents a lecture about serial killers including Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and the Midnight Cowboy, who is currently at-large. As he delves deeper into the material and questions the public's infatuation with the killers, Crowley's own violent streak begins to show, and his relationship with his assistant Jacob becomes strained.

When Crowley introduces Gabrielle, the only witness to survive one of Midnight Cowboy's attacks, tensions hit a peak and Crowley reveals his true intentions in a genuinely terrifying conclusion that is guaranteed to have the audience screaming. This chilling play by Edmonton's Marty Chan is a psychological experiment about the nature of fear, imagination, and deification of serial killers.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION: My plan is to produce the show under the Equity Artists' Collective Policy, which means those involved can be Equity or non-Equity. Payment is divided among the artists at the end of the process, so while there's no money up front, the hope is that it will be a wicked experience and a terrifying show that, at Halloween time, can attract an audience (and result in a bit of money for involved artists).
As I said, I'm also seeking new collaborators, so that I can get to know the work of other artists, which is always useful knowledge for future projects too!

The show will rehearse primarily in the evenings and on weekends starting in early September. The team members I'm looking for right away
are:

An Associate Director/Producer: Someone to help run rehearsals and work with me to direct the show, while also taking on some producing responsibilities.

A Set/Costume/Lighting Designer: This can be one person or a couple, depending on areas of expertise. Design needs are minimal, but there's room for play, for sure.

A Stage Manager: To keep us organized and help run the show (and to help us make people scream night after night).

If you're interested in working on the show in one of these capacities, please email INFO@BONEHOUSE.CA with a statement of interest and a sense of your experience in that area. Ideally, I'm hoping to have these roles filled by August 8th.

CAST & AUDITIONS: Auditions will take place August 14th & 15th.
Interested actors, please email your headshot and resume to INFO@BONEHOUSE.CA with a statement of interest and your availability on the audition dates.

Eugene Crowley (M): Self proclaimed mind-hunter, a disturbing passion for information about serial killers. 30s-50s.

Jacob (M): Eugene's well-meaning assistant. 20s-30s.

Gabrielle (F): A freightened young woman who survived the killer's attack (20s-30s).

Thanks in advance for your interest. If you have any questions, please email info@bonehouse.ca or send me a message via Facebook.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD TO ANYONE YOU THINK MIGHT BE INTERESTED, and I look forward to sharing the show with everyone at the end of October.
Cheers!

Please Note: This is not a Downstage show. Although I'm directing it and it's taking place in the Motel, it's purely a side project for me - an opportunity to work on a piece I love and a chance to collaborate with new artists. I hope you'll join me!

Play Summary: When an image of Jesus appears on the side of a Tim Hortons restaurant in Nately, Nova Scotia, life is forever changed. The town's inhabitants are challenged to ask difficult questions about faith, life and love with sometimes moving, sometimes hilarious results. Complicating the matter, of course, are the more mundane questions of whether this appearance is a miracle, an accident, or quite possibly even a hoax.

At the centre of this wickedly entertaining play resides the more existential and personal question of what has happened to our notion of meaning and ethics in the strip-mall culture of concrete and crass competition which has replaced a more pastoral and rural life of care for the earth, the cycle of the seasons and its festivals, and the blessings of renewal in the family. Has religion lost the ability to mediate these two conditions, or did it ever really have that power?
