Show description:
Sarah is a nice Jewish girl with a problem: her parents want her married to a nice Jewish boy. They have never met her boyfriend, a WASP executive named Chris Kringle. She tells them she is dating a Jewish doctor and they insist on meeting him. She plans a dinner party and, over the heated protests of Chris, employs an escort service to send her a Jewish date to be Dr. Steinberg. Instead, they send Bob Schroeder, an aspiring actor who agrees to perform the impersonation. Happily, he is extremely convincing in the role and Sarah's parents are enraptured. Will Sarah fall for Bob too, and what about Chris?
Character Breakdown:
Sarah (20s to 30s) female identifying lead. — A successful school teacher who nonetheless does her best to please her parents and family. A tour de force for a lead actress combining elements of drama, broad comedy, and physical comedy.
Chris (20s to 30s) male identifying supporting. — Sarah’s actual boyfriend at the start of the play. Successful ad executive. Great character role.
Bob (20s to 30s) male identifying lead. — An out-of-work actor hired to impersonate the successful Dr. Steinberg for Sarah’s parents. A tour de force for a lead actor combining drama and physical comedy.
Joel (late 20s to 30’s) male identifying supporting. — Great character role. Sarah’s brother who also happens to be a therapist . Can you imagine your sibling trying to psychoanalyze you?
Miriam (50s to 60s) female identifying supporting. — Sarah’s mother. A force of nature and the root of many of Sarah’s hang ups. A confident, perhaps somewhat glamorous woman who is very much used to getting her own way.
Abe (50’s to 60s) male identifying supporting. — Sarah’s father. Miriam’s husband. The cornerstone of his family and sage observer of the mother and daughter relationship. A fantastic character role.
Auditioners should come prepared with a maximum 2 minute monologue and be prepared to work the monologue with the director. Knowledge of Yiddish or Hebrew would be favoured. For the safety of the entire cast, crew and audience please only audition if you are fully vaccinated against covid-19.
