Audition Notice: Carol Singers (Paid)

Calgary Carolers, a new venture of the Youth Singers of Calgary, is holding open auditions for the upcoming holiday season.

What are we looking for:

After several busy caroling seasons, we are expanding our caroling roster and would like to invite audition submissions from strong singers, age 16 and up, who are comfortable with singing one to a part with limited rehearsal.

Performances will have variable availability needs, across weekdays (usually lunch hours, but not always), evenings, and weekends. Performers will require reliable transportation to get to and from these gigs, which take place across Calgary and in the Calgary area. You do not need to be available for all of these times in order to audition.

Most Calgary Carolers performance opportunities will be in performer-provided wardrobe. Additional information is below.

For those cast, a rehearsal of material will take place on the evening of November 16th at the ATCO Center for Performing Arts with Calgary Carolers Director Dave Morton.

Please note that being cast with the Calgary Carolers does not guarantee a certain number of performances. As we will need to send ensembles out in balanced quartets, more work may be available for some performers than for others. Availability checks will be done per gig, using the Choir Genius web platform. Every effort will be made to ensure an equitable division of available opportunities among those who are available for each gig.

Compensation:

Calgary Carolers performers will typically be paid a rate of $50 per caroling hour.

For any gigs where this rate is not the case, that information will be made known along with the availability check.

Required Wardrobe:

Calgary Carolers primarily perform in one of these two looks, which are performer-provided:

  • Classy Black and Reds

    • A semi-formal look, in a combination of black and red

    • Acceptable pieces include: dress pants, knit sweaters, dress shirts, cocktail dresses, fashion scarves, etc

    • For outdoor gigs in this look, a classy black coat is required: felt pea coats are preferred; puffer coats are not an acceptable option

  • Christmas Sweaters

    • A casual look, with black bottoms or jeans (to be specified with avails check) and a Christmas sweater on top

    • Christmas sweaters can be charming, cute, quirky, or creative, but must be family appropriate

To Audition:

We are accepting video auditions until October 16th, 2023.

Please begin your audition video with a short introduction. Let us know your name, your vocal part, and a brief overview of your choral experience.

Then, we would like to see you perform two pieces of repertoire from our caroling book: Ding Dong Merrily on High and Frosty the Snowman. Please perform each song from the beginning through the first ending.

Sheet music is available here:

https://bit.ly/455txNq

Please perform one piece in each wardrobe option, and then upload them as a single audition file to the following link:

https://bit.ly/3rjhC0I

If you do not currently own the requested wardrobe pieces but would be willing to acquire them if cast, please make a note of that in your audition video introduction.

Contact Information:

For any questions about these auditions, please email Youth Singers' Production Manager Brianna Rudolfsen at brianna@youthsingers.org.

Joan:  A geologist, 50-60 years old, recently been promoted to a VP level. She has worked for this company  for over 15 years.  She grew up in a poor neighborhood and considers herself lucky to have been born smart.   She is diligent and has done well in this company because of that.

Melissa: A SAIT grad, 55-65 year-old.  She has kept the friendship going with Joan in the many years since  they worked together at the Geological Survey. Melissa has moved to the oil patch and has had a series of  well-paying jobs. She is outgoing and makes friends easily.

George:  A 55-65 year-old oil patch executive and person who Joan has worked with at different points over  the last 15 years. He has worked for his current company for over 20 years.  He is a good guy – basic, honest,  straightforward.  Joan and George have gotten into the habit of having coffee together once a week.

Casting Call: Bathsheba & the Books - Non-union, Paid Theatre

Casting Call: Bathsheba and the Books

Non-union, paid (honorarium)

Handmade Ivy Productions is casting David Ellis Heyman’s new biblical comedy Bathsheba and  the Books for upcoming shows in the Calgary-Region One-Act Play Festival and the opportunity  of an extension to the 2023 Edmonton Fringe Festival. We are seeking actors with a flair for  language, comedy, and pacing. This project will be directed by Rosalind Jackson Roe.

Key Information:

Self-tape to be submitted to rosalindjacksonroe@gmail.com by no later than 11 p.m. January 13th, 2023. Tape should include tail slate (including desired character, preferred pronouns, name) and a 1-2 minute comedic monologue. Selected applicants will be contacted for in-person callbacks using sides from the script the following weekend. In the body of your email, please note times you are available for rehearsals.

Rehearsals will begin early February and take place 3 times/week in Calgary until the Calgary Region One-Act Play Festival (March 16-18th)

We are an official selection of the 2023 Edmonton Fringe Festival (August 17th-27th). After a brief break following the One-Act Play Festival in March, cast will have the possibility of being invited to attend as a part of the Edmonton Fringe Festival cast. We will resume rehearsals in July to prepare for the Fringe Festival.

Description of Play:

In order to escape her racy past, Bathsheba decides to pursue her love of literature and  compile the world’s first Bible. But when her dim-witted son King Solomon nearly goes  bankrupt, he seizes her project for the profits and then gives her fifteen minutes to select  the books that will affect world history for the next thirty centuries.

Roles:

Bathsheba: 35-55, female, any ethnicity. The legendary sex symbol of (pre)-Biblical  times, Bathsheba has decided to pursue her intellectual ambitions and work on a little  editorial hobby— compiling the Bible. Whip smart, ambitious, and still able to call on  her sensual prowess when it suits her.

Hiram: 35+, male, any ethnicity. In charge of King Solomon’s ambitious temple project,  Hiram has been around since the time of King David and Bathsheba’s legendary first  encounter, and he’s stuck around for a reason. Knows how to turn any situation to his  advantage. If used cars existed, he’d be selling them.

Koheleth: 25 +, male, any ethnicity. An intellectual, and King Solomon’s former speech  writer, Koheleth has an earnestness, way with words, and touch of arrogance that either  endear or threaten. He’s only come back to the palace as a favour to Bathsheba.

Solomon: 25-35, male, any ethnicity. The famed King of Wisdom has a little growing up  to do before he’ll become the stuff of legends. But when Solomon thinks Solomon is  already perfect, any opposition needs to be worded carefully or risk the quick execution  of absolute power. Think a toddler in a man’s body with pretty intense Daddy issues and  absolute power.
