ABOUT THE PROJECT

This video-based simulation is a collaboration between the University of Calgary’s Faculties of

professionals navigating Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) screening and disclosures in clinical

settings.

ROLE: MAYA

MAYA: 20s, Female (she/her), Queer, Person of Colour. Role adaptable based on the

actor’s cultural background.

Maya is a first-generation Canadian living in Calgary. She is an emerging visual artist and works

part-time as a server. Independent and resilient, she has built a life for herself in the local arts

community despite ongoing financial instability. Maya is navigating complex personal tensions,

including a strained relationship with her family, who are unaware of her queer identity.

Currently living with her girlfriend, Maya is in a relationship that has become increasingly

controlling. Over time, emotional tension has escalated into physical conflict.

SUMMARY

The simulation focuses on Maya who ends up in an emergency room with a sprained wrist

sustained during a recent incident. She is accompanied by her partner, who often speaks on her

behalf and exerts subtle control over the interaction. The simulation follows Maya from the point

of view of a healthcare provider as they screen for IPV and offer support.
