ROLES / RANGES:
STUART MACPHAIL, 70s, sixth generation Canadian of Scottish ancestry. A former champion curler,
Stuart now works as the ice-maker in his small-town curling rink. He is forced to step in as the teacher
and coach of the Learn to Curl night for new Canadians. Trouble is, Stuart is full of negative opinions
about immigrants. In addition to his ignorance and mean-spiritedness, Stuart is dry, quick-witted, lonely,
and hurt. He also possesses the ability to change.
CHARMAINE BAILEY, 50s, came to Canada twenty-seven years ago from Jamaica. Charmaine is the
manager of the local Tim Horton’s. She is very involved in her church and community, especially in the
resettlement of the Al-Sayed family. Her husband has recently died, and we eventually learn that is the
real reason she signed up for Learn to Curl. Charmaine is smart, sardonic, and generous of spirit.
ANOOPJEET SINGH, 35-45, came to Canada ten years ago from India. Anoopjeet is the father of
three young boys and works as a shift supervisor at the Tim Horton’s. He aspires to a better job and
better life for his family. While he is the natural joker of the group, he is also prone to frustration and
anger. What he lacks in skill as a curler, he makes up for in wit, loyalty, and heart.
MIKE CHANG, 20s, came to Canada three and a half years ago from China. Mike came to Canada for
med school, but he’s planning to stay long-term to be with his girlfriend…who also happens to be
Stuart’s granddaughter. He’s the natural athlete and natural leader of the group, becoming the team’s
skip and de facto coach. Mike is serious and passionate, with a sly sense of humour.
FATIMA AL-SAYED, 17, came to Canada two months ago from Syria. Fatima and her parents live in
this small town as part of a local church’s private sponsorship of a refugee family. Her facility with
English improves greatly over the course of the play. On the ice, she becomes the team’s strategist, but
her main concern is her brother, who is still back home in Syria. Fatima is highly intelligent and very
funny, but her story is also the emotional core of the play.
