Audition Notice: Princess Ida by Morpheus Theatre

AUDITIONS FOR PRINCESS IDA - Nov 19, 21 & 24!!
A Comic Operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan
Directed/Choreographed by Kaleigh Richards, Music Direction by Winnifred Hume
At the Pumphouse Theatre Apr 26 - May 11, 2019

For more information (including character descriptions), or to book an audition, visit www.morpheustheatre.ca, call 403-246-2999 or e-mail audition@morpheustheatre.ca.

Princess Ida is having nothing to do with men, never mind love, or marriage. She is so firm in her belief that she has locked herself away in a University, attended only by women, and that is exactly where she plans to stay. She was betrothed to young Prince Hilarion from a very early age, and her failure to arrive to meet him with her father, King Gama, could be interpreted as an act of war, but still, she is having none of it. In fact, she's willing to fight the men who show up on her doorstep if need be. Her fellow chaste and heretofore uninterested female friends, on the other hand, find themselves face to face with Cupid and less keen to do battle. A lesser known work of the dynamic duo, Princess Ida is nonetheless brimming with those qualities we love in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan: humour, sweeping and intelligent lyrics, witty commentary, danger and commotion! In the end, love wins the day, and for more than just our royal couple. It's an exciting conclusion to our 24th season, so jump for joy and gaily bound down to the theatre to join us for Princess Ida!

Princess Ida is based on the 1847 narrative poem "The Princess" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, in which the title character escapes an arranged marriage to found a women's university. The libretto is drawn from W.S. Gilbert's 1870 play (also called "The Princess"), with new music by Arthur Sullivan. Sullivan's music is particularly well-regarded in this piece; his settings for the songs in Act Two are known as 'the string of pearls.' Principal roles include Princess Ida, Lady Psyche, and Lady Blanche for the women, and Prince Hilarion, King Hildebrand and King Gama for the men (among others).

Open auditions for all roles will take place:
Monday Nov 19th (7:00 to 9:30pm)
Wednesday Nov 21st (7:00 to 9:30pm)
Saturday Nov 24th (1:00 to 4:00pm)

ROLES / RANGES:

STUART MACPHAIL, 70s, sixth generation Canadian of Scottish ancestry. A former champion curler, Stuart now works as the ice-maker in his small-town curling rink. He is forced to step in as the teacher and coach of the Learn to Curl night for new Canadians. Trouble is, Stuart is full of negative opinions about immigrants. In addition to his ignorance and mean-spiritedness, Stuart is dry, quick-witted, lonely, and hurt. He also possesses the ability to change.

CHARMAINE BAILEY, 50s, came to Canada twenty-seven years ago from Jamaica. Charmaine is the manager of the local Tim Horton’s. She is very involved in her church and community, especially in the resettlement of the Al-Sayed family. Her husband has recently died, and we eventually learn that is the real reason she signed up for Learn to Curl. Charmaine is smart, sardonic, and generous of spirit.

ANOOPJEET SINGH, 35-45, came to Canada ten years ago from India. Anoopjeet is the father of three young boys and works as a shift supervisor at the Tim Horton’s. He aspires to a better job and better life for his family. While he is the natural joker of the group, he is also prone to frustration and anger. What he lacks in skill as a curler, he makes up for in wit, loyalty, and heart.

MIKE CHANG, 20s, came to Canada three and a half years ago from China. Mike came to Canada for med school, but he’s planning to stay long-term to be with his girlfriend…who also happens to be Stuart’s granddaughter. He’s the natural athlete and natural leader of the group, becoming the team’s skip and de facto coach. Mike is serious and passionate, with a sly sense of humour.

FATIMA AL-SAYED, 17, came to Canada two months ago from Syria. Fatima and her parents live in this small town as part of a local church’s private sponsorship of a refugee family. Her facility with English improves greatly over the course of the play. On the ice, she becomes the team’s strategist, but her main concern is her brother, who is still back home in Syria. Fatima is highly intelligent and very funny, but her story is also the emotional core of the play. A copy of the script is available to preview at the Alberta Theatre Projects office reception desk (220 9 Ave. SE) during regular business hours.
