Audition Notice: PROOF

Workshop Theatre Presents PROOF Written By David Auburn

March 4 - March 12, 2015 at the Pumphouse Theatre

Directed by: Ed Ogum

Audition Dates: Wednesday, December 9, 2015 & Monday, December 14, 2015 from 6-10

 Workshop Theatre space.

 Bay 10 415 60 Ave SE
 Calgary, AB

Synopsis

Catherine has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, Robert. When he dies she has more than grief to deal with: there's her estranged sister, Claire, and Hal, a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that Robert left behind. And a further problem: how much of her father's madness or genius will Catherine inherit?

Character Breakdown

CATHERINE - A young woman, 25 years old, who inherited much of her father's mathematical genius, and, she fears, his "instability" as well; she gave up her life and schooling to take care of her father until his recent death.

CLAIRE - Catherine's older sister, a practical and business-minded woman who has been comfortably successful in her work and relationships.
She left Robert and Catherine behind, distancing herself from the run-down family home of her youth. She left the family to make a new life for herself in New York City.

ROBERT - A recently deceased mathematician praised for his groundbreaking work in his youth, but whose later years were plagued by delusional mental illness; he is seen in Catherine's imagination and in flashbacks.

HAROLD (HAL) DOBBS - One of Robert's last Ph.D. students during the one year his idol and mentor's illness went into remission, at least enabling Robert to teach, if not continue his own creative mathematical work.

 Audition Requirements

Auditions will be held in pre-scheduled 10 minute time slots. Please contact Kayte Davies, at kayteparnell@yahoo.ca with your headshot & resume, and to schedule a time. Please prepare a 1-2 minute dramatic monologue. There will also be sides sent out, so that you can be familiar with them.

power ballad or musical theatre tune of your choice. NO A CAPELLA.

-        Dance auditions will be at call-backs.

The following is a list of available characters in the show and includes the vocal range for the character.

Please note: We will be casting based upon appearance not physical age.
If you are 30 and can reasonably play a high school student, please submit!

HEATHER MCNAMARA - Beautiful, innocent, stupid, can be mean on command if Heather Chandler orders it, but actually quite vulnerable and fearful. Voice: Strong belt to Db, D preferred. Soprano for chorus.
NOTE: in certain choral songs Heather Mac and Duke can switch vocal parts as needed.

HEATHER DUKE - Whipping-girl of the 3 Heathers. When she finally becomes Queen Bee she wields power like a bulldozer. Alto for chorus.  Voice:
Strong belt to C, D preferred.  NOTE: in certain choral songs Heathers Duke and Mac can switch vocal parts as needed.

MARTHA DUNNSTOCK - Nicknamed “Martha Dumptruck”, the opposite of hot, confident, or popular. Huge and beautiful soul, optimistic even in the face of rejection. Voice: Strong belt to E or F, wide vocal expression.

RAM SWEENEY - Linebacker. Big, insensitive to the feelings of others, ruled by appetites. Voice: Strong Baritone, belt to G, some Falsetto useful.

KURT KELLY - Quarterback and Captain. Big, chiseled, rude, entitled, cocky. Mean, thinks he’s the brains in the friendship with Ram. Voice:
Tenor, strong belt to Ab or A, some Falsetto. NOTE:  in certain songs Ram and Kurt can switch choral assignment if, say, Ram sings higher than Kurt.

RAM’S DAD/BIG BUD DEAN/COACH RIPPER - Ram’s Dad: Former football player turned suburban Dad, has never outgrown his glory days in high school. Hates weakness, but capable of soul-searching when tragedy strikes. Also plays Big Bud Dean: JD’s single Dad. Big jolly personality that barely conceals the enormous rage bubbling just below the surface. Quite possibly a serial bomber. Also plays Coach Ripper:
Stalwart, man’s man; quick to defend his players. Voice:
Baritone/Tenor – power Country/Gospel belt to Ab, higher welcome.
NOTE: Sometimes this actor has played Principal Gowan instead of Big Bud/Coach.

MS. FLEMING/VERONICA’S MOM - Ms. Fleming: Aging hippie teacher, still yearning for the day the Age of Aquarius reaches Ohio. Hungry for the spotlight, resentful of entitled youth. Also plays Veronica’s Mom:
easygoing, distant, yet capable of laying down the law. Voice: Great belt up to C, higher always welcome.

KURT’S DAD/VERONICA’S DAD/PRINCIPAL GOWAN - Kurt’s Dad:
Straight-laced, very conservative, also former football player. A simple guy, not book smart, you’d be happy to share a beer with him. Also plays Veronica’s Dad: Easygoing and distant. Voice: Strong Baritone/Tenor -- power Country/Gospel belt to G, even higher better.
Also plays Principal Gowan: Rumpled, burned out, hates conflict.  NOTE:
Sometimes this actor has played Big Bud/Coach instead of Principal Gowan.

Bitter Geek - A put-upon, bitter geek. Voice: Bari (up to F#) or Tenor (up to A).

Blowdried Preppy -  A blowdried 80’s preppy. Voice: Bass (up to E) or Bari (up to G#).

Hipster Dork - Thinks he’s Ducky from ‘Pretty In Pink.’ Voice:
Bari (up to F#) or Tenor (up to A).

Goth Girl - A sullen Goth girl. Voice: Belt to at least C# (a Soprano up to high A/B is also a plus).

Stoner Chick - A fuzzyheaded stoner chick. Voice: Belt to at least C# (a Soprano up to high A/B is also a plus).

Young Republicanette -  A tennis-playing, uptight Student Council type.
Voice: Belt to at least C# (Soprano up to high A/B is also a plus).

Call Backs

Shooting
A 7 day interval between
2015 October 14-November 27
A location of your choosing –
  details provided in “How”

How:
After some initial direction, and with support as required, the entries for each character will be shot alone in the comfort of the bedroom of the actor/actress when they have the time to do so and using their own wardrobe. There should be zero expenses to the actor/actress. Audio and visual equipment will be supplied by Secret Diary.  Likewise, this is a low budget production and no remuneration will be paid up front to any actors and actresses. Instead, in a generous effort to get this channel up and running, Secret Diary is willing to pay 10% of any money earned by Secret Diary: School Fire to each actor/actress. If, for example, each entry received 100,000 views then that would mean an estimated $4,400 USD per actor/actress. Actual pay would depend entirely on series viewership and it could be more or less than this, but this estimate should hopefully showcase the potential.

Who:
Five non-union roles are being offered. Candidates need to be 18 years of age or over but will be playing teenagers from anywhere between 13-18. Please see below for details.

Cheerleader Type (Hannah): A happy go lucky girl who comes from a rich family. She loves fashion, dancing and gossip and is an extreme extrovert. She can generally be described as unintelligent and gullible and while she loves to gossip she is never intentionally mean. She is the most popular girl in school and is impossible to dislike. She despises violence and believes in karma.

High Achiever Type (Sarah): An extremely intelligent, cold and calculating teenage girl whose dad has left her mom and her, leaving them poor and barely scraping by. She uses the intense distrust this has created to guide her decisions and everything she does is with an end goal of escaping her home town and becoming rich and successful. She is quite popular still as she is a great actress and people think she is nicer than she is, but deep down she is manipulative and cruel-hearted.

Jock Type (Mike): An excellent baseball and basketball player whose hard work and team first attitude carry him to successes in those fields. His work ethic carries over to academics but the success doesn’t, much to his father’s disappointment. He comes from a rich family and is the most popular boy in school. He has an easy way about him and generally tries to make good decisions.

Brainy Geek Type (Emily): A bookish and earnest girl who is always in the running for top student. She only really has one friend and would lean towards being introverted. Her mother was her hero and she recently passed away causing her to rethink her life and try to get outside of her comfort zone. Trusting to a fault, she is a well intentioned girl who will still needs to learn a lot of life lessons.

Lazy Gamer Type (Matt): A loner who only really has one friend and prefers to stay away from people when at all possible, despite constant pressure otherwise from his parents. Doesn’t like being in the limelight and gets very nervous when forced into it. Very laid back and tends to put the bare minimum of effort into everything except for gaming. He is someone people would like if they could ever get him to come out of his shell.
