The Collected Energy: an introduction to the methodologies of Tadashi Suzuki

The Collected Energy: an introduction to the methodologies of Tadashi Suzuki.

This 12 hour workshop shall serve to introduce some of the founding, physical modalities in the practice of Suzuki, and its application to the development of a performer’s Ki energy - a physical connection by the individual as well as the collective gathering of this energy by an ensemble. Tadashi Suzuki’s work is quite abstract but given the open dedication of a beginner’s mind, it can provide alternate understandings to the artist and help define a stronger relationship to their audience, and to the other artists engaged in the same activity.

Register before April 8th for Early Bird prices!

When: April 23rd and 24th from 10:00am - 4:00pm
Where: TC Rehearsal Hall: 3rd Floor, Stage Door Entrance (9th Ave), Arts Commons
Cost: $150.00 or $125 Early Bird (Before April 8th)

Peter Balkwill is a co-artistic director, and director of workshops at the Old Trout Puppet Workshop in Calgary, Alberta. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in acting from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre from University of Victoria. While studying he focused almost exclusively on the physical application of theatre. He has had extensive exposure to the unique methods of Tadashi Suzuki’s performance and ensemble building exercises, Joan Skinner’s improvisational movement and releasing exploration, as well as a savage dose of Kaz Piesiwaski’s Eastern European approach to full character and neutral mask. All work ties to a series of ideas that move towards articulation within the silent narrative, clarity without text, and the physical unity of an ensemble.

Synopsis

Evie Malone- gamer girl, college senior and confirmed virgin- has it all figured out. Not only does she command a top-ranked guild in Warcraft with her online boyfriend, she also makes a little cash on the side writing love letters for people who've screwed up their relationships.
Love is like Warcraft, after all. It's all about strategies, game plans, and not taking stupid risks.

Well, that's what she thinks... until she actually falls for a guy. In Real Life. And no amount of gaming expertise will help her out when she finds herself with a non-virtual, totally real, and incredibly cute boyfriend, who wants more from her than she's willing to give.

Character Breakdown

EVIE: early to mid twenties. Evie is smart and creative. She is capable of great charm and is a natural born leader, as long as she doesn't have to talk to an actual person. With people she is shy and awkward, but still possesses a quirky magnetism.

KITTY: early to mid twenties. Kitty is a bit of a hedonist, with a love for parties and men. On the surface she might seem selfish, but deep down she possesses all the qualities of a true friend.

RAUL: early to late twenties. Raul is handsome in a classic sense.
Underneath his fair looks is kind, sensitive, and loving soul.

RYAN: early to late twenties. Ryan is the quintessential loner gamer, he is Evie's online boyfriend and displays a bit of a possessive streak.

MALE ENSEMBLE: early to late twenties. Good character actor responsible for multiple roles.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE: early to late twenties. Good character actor responsible for multiple roles.

Audition Requirements

Auditions will be held in pre-scheduled 10 minute time slots. Please contact Kayte Davies, at kayteparnell@yahoo.ca with your headshot & resume, and to schedule a time. Please prepare a 1-2 minute comedic monologue.

Youth Performers Wanted

Youth Central, a local youth volunteer organization, is looking for youth performers for our annual Youth of Distinction Award ceremony coming up on May 7th, 2016. [1] These awards are unique in that they do not focus on academic achievement; they recognize youth ages 12-18 for supporting their peers, overcoming personal challenges or lending their voice to a cause they are passionate about. The awards are also promoted and the ceremony is planned by a committee of 11 youth.

After receiving 139 nominations, we will recognize 30 young finalists at an award ceremony where they can invite their friends and families, and the recipients of each of our nine categories will be announced live. In an effort to further promote the amazing things youth do in our community, we reach out to young performers each year, to liven up our ceremony.

We would be looking for 1-2 performances to take place during our brunch celebration, each about 5 minutes in length. As we are a non-profit group, we can offer brunch, free admission to the zoo and a small honorarium. If there is interest in performing at our upcoming ceremony on May 7th, we ask that you please submit a short video clip, via email by March 21st, for our youth steering committee to review.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

MICHELLE KEMBALL

 SHOW INFORMATION
 SUMMARY
Little Red Rising Hood is off to see her sick grandma in the woods.
When the Big Bad Wolf finds out, she has other ideas and will stop at nothing to have things her way! Through a series of outrageous challenges, mixed directions and clever trickery, Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf clash in an epic quest to make it to Grandma’s house first!
This modern twist on the classic tale will entertain audiences both young and old.

ROLES

 * Little Red Riding Hood – Young and vibrant. Her youthful nature is part of her charm but also gets in her way sometimes. She has a hint of attitude when she doesn't get her way but she is by no means arrogant.
She also knows Kung Fu.
 * B.B. Wolf – An arrogant queen bee type girl. She is the ultimate “plastic” – she has style, looks and popularity. She is deceptive, sneaky and full of ideas that will benefit her.
 * Granny – A lovely old woman who is perhaps losing it a little. She is a little deaf, a little blind and a little crazy but her intentions are good and ultimately she loves all of those close to her with all her heart.
 * Mama Blue – A practical modern day woman. She is a proud single mother who has a firm hand with a loving heart. She is a lumberjack by trade but this does not reflect her femininity.

_Note: ALL performers have to be comfortable singing, being able to move (dance) and interact with children._

ROLES ARE NOT AGE SPECIFIC BUT ACTORS MUST BE OVER 18.

Non-Equity Production. Payment will be on a per show basis with an honorarium for the rehearsal period. In addition, cast and crew are given access to the Stage West buffet prior to each show.

Audition Notice: Angry Priest

Audition Notice: My Father’s Escape from Hitler and Stalin and the Consequences of it for Me

Old Angry Priest
A man close to 60 who was born into a family of 14 children and never got the love/attention he needed from his mother. He got her back when he had a girlfriend at 20 as if saying “I don’t need you mother; I have another who loves me and only me”. Unfortunately, he caught the woman cheating on him. He could never erase the image from his psyche. He did not become a priest because he was called to this vocation by God but because he closed himself off to all women holding secret resentment towards them for years. In a small village he is desired by some women. He denies himself and hates them so much he actually asks to be moved from one parish when a woman tried to befriend him. When he has been a priest for 30 years the opposite situation happens. He meets a woman, Grace, he finds irresistible sexually but has no clue how to act. He invents a story that it is Grace who is attracted to him and rejects her. The woman is totally surprised since he means nothing to her. When she goes to ask him for charity he explodes on her all of his anger and resentment towards the opposite sex crushing her.

Priest: “ You only come to church because you want to have sex with me. You desire me. You’re a dirty despicable woman; trying to seduce a priest!!!!!! Women like you deserve to be strangled! Here’s what you’ve asked for.”

He moves his hips and 3 black snakes like smoke come out of his hips hissing, ready to bite her as he laughs like the devil.
