AUDITION NOTICE: Fire Exit Theatre

AUDITION NOTICE for
The Savannah Disputation

By Evan Smith

Directed by Barrett Hileman

Audition Dates: Tuesday, August. 28th  (6:00 – 10:00 p.m.)

Callbacks: Friday, August 31st (5:00 – 8:00 p.m.)

 With FIRE EXIT THEARE

Audition Location: Rocky Mountain College (Studio 3)

4039 Brentwood Rd. NW (near Brentwood C-Train stop)

PLEASE PREPARE: One (1) 60-second contemporary, comedic monologue. You may be asked to cold read.

Play Summary: Two aging sisters’ lives are interrupted by a young door-to-door evangelist. Things take a turn for the unexpected (and hilarious) when they invite the evangelist and the local parish priest to dinner at the same time. A sort of theological Golden Girls, at the intersection of theology and real life.

Character Breakdown:

These are comical, paradoxical characters from the American South. They are real people, not caricatures. They are lower middle class, with specific, deeply-held ideological beliefs.

MARY: The oldest sister. Elderly. Agile spark plug who can be physical when necessary. A no-nonsense, like-able, cranky firecracker who says what she thinks and refuses to be taken advantage of. Strong personality required. Able to truthfully reveal underlying pain when the moment comes.

MARGARET: The younger sister. Elderly. A bit wide-eyed and genuinely friendly to everyone. Can’t say no – can get taken advantage of. Literally frightened by conflict to the point she leaves the room. She is unsettled by big words, heady doctrine, and strong opinions. Courageous in her pursuit of truth.

MELISSA: 30’s (needs to look older than 25). Direct, earnest, confident. Blond (“Natural, with highlights for lift”). Loves Jesus. Wants to love a man. Well-groomed, always does her hair and make-up. Think of her as a southern cheerleader with the best of intentions, and a history of bad luck with men. Her loneliness and desire to do good are both real.

FATHER MURPHY: Middle-aged. Priest. Author. Intellectual. A man who lives a life of the mind. He is settled in life and his little routines. Not easily ruffled or engaged. Honest.

Show Dates: November 28 – Dec. 2
Tech Rehearsals: November 24-27
Rehearsals: September – November (2-3 days a week) evenings and weekends

Artistic Director-Fire Exit Theatre

AUDITIONS: Heritage Park

Auditions: Halloween and Christmas Productions – Heritage Park

Heritage Park is pleased to announce auditions for its Ghouls Night Out Production: “The Potion Dungeon” by Trevor Matheson and its Once Upon a Christmas Production: “Misdeeds at Mistletoe Mine” by Tim Koening.

The Potion Dungeon – Guests will enter the Gunn’s Dairy barn and create potions: supernatural spells and cure alls. Wizard Wildamore then leads a ‘Potions 101’ wizardry class. During the vignette many things go bad with his four patients. Then a few of the guest’s potions are used to calm the situation. Vignette’s are scripted, but will alter each character’s state based on the particular type of potion used. Performances are continuous throughout the evening, as guests filter in and out of the exhibit.

ROLES ~ The Potion Dungeon
Professor Wildamore – A wizard based on Dumbledore from Harry Potter, could be male or female.
Lurch – A male scholar who is un-inspired.
Wolf Man – A wolf man captured in Dead Man’s Flats.
Medusa – A powerful, mad woman who can turn people to stone.
Frankenstein’s Patient – Just looking for a place to belonging.

Misdeed at Mistletoe Mine – A 40 minute melodrama performed in the Canmore Opera House. Poor little Holly Hock. Orphaned, she has inherited a gold mine with no gold and a hotel with no guests. Her aunt, Rose Bush, has taken both her and the failing business under her wing. When handsome Redmond Wood rides into town, the future suddenly looks promising for Rose and Holly, but the villainous Mayor William Z. Lucifer has other plans. With the help of femme fatale Chiquita Rosarita Ricardo, Mayor Lucifer concocts a plan to drive Red out of town and take custody of Holly, thereby inheriting the hotel and gold mine. Due to the “sanity clause” of the adoption agreement, Lucifer just needs to prove Rose Bush unfit for guardianship, which he attempts to do by drugging Rose’s drink and calling the Matron in to witness her strange behavior! Tough-as-nails Matron Tucson Tessie and the locals of Hillcrest and the Hillcrest Inn will entertain audiences with this highly comical melodrama full of wit and physical humor.

ROLES ~ Misdeeds at Mistletoe Mine
Stubby Nuggets ~ An old prospector; narrator Diogenes ~ Young Stubby; desk clerk at the Yule Fall Inn; non-speaking Redmond “Red” Wood ~ Handsome hero with a scandalous secret Rose Bush ~ Beautiful heroine; pure as the driven snow Holly Hock ~ Charming, young orphan girl, niece to Rose.
William Z. Lucifer, ESQ ~ Evil mayor of Hill Crest; also a lawyer Chiquita Rosarita Ricardo ~ Brazen femme fatale with a heavy Cuban accent Tucson Tessie ~ Tough-as-nails matron of Hill Crest.

Why should I study at Company of Rogues? How does Rogues compare with other schools?

Every Instructor at Company of Rogues is a working professional. This means that your Instructor has up-to-date industry information that informs your education. They bring home the goods to you from being on set, actively auditioning and also Directing. This is the Studio to come to for up-to-date industry informed training in Western Canada. Our well rounded Instructors are working as ACTORS/DIRECTORS/WRITERS/and INSTRUCTORS. Training professional actors in Calgary since 1996 Company of Rogues was established in Vancouver in 1993. How do we compare? Read below.
What Makes Rogues Training Different Than Other Schools?
Our training is rooted in the tradition espoused by the major studios in NYC and other American based institutions. From the teachings of Constantin Stanislavski and his interpretations through Sanford Meisner and Uta Hagen, our focus is on "authentic performance". This is based on the Stanislavski concept of "the actor living the part". Working from the first person, subjective tradition, an actor’s performance is deeply rooted in truthful human behaviour and emotion. This authenticity is the hallmark of many of the great, New York trained American film/stage actors—like Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Jessica Lange, Faye Dunaway, Diane Keaton, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Harvey Keitel, to name a few.

At Rogues, we train actors to apply this authentic style of acting to both theatre and film. Our actors have an honesty and raw emotional power not taught by most other actor training programs in Canada that are based in other traditions. While we provide training in all aspects of the craft including Voice, Movement, Scene Study and Shakespeare, setting us apart is our in-depth classes in Meisner Technique and Acting for Film & TV. It is our belief that a well-trained actor can work in all mediums if their work is grounded in the truth of human behaviour and emotion; this is the essence of an "authentic performance style". This is what separates us from other actor training programs.

Reasons to Choose Rogues
• Customized programs free of academic requirements
• Instructors are working professionals
• Most classes offered evenings & weekends (allows for employment during training)
• Strong ties to the professional Film and Theatre communities in Calgary and Vancouver
• Is represented at Theatre Alberta’s annual EMERGE Auditions
• Actors are actively sought by local/regional agents, casting directors, film makers and theatre companies
• Lifetime Mentorship
• Flexible Payment Plans
Company of Rogues Actors’ Studio provides a positive environment that fosters the development of the individual actor within a supportive ensemble of highly dedicated creative artists.
We invite you to audit our classes and discover why Company of Rogues is the place to be.

IMPORTANT STUDIO ANNOUNCEMENT

~Studio Directors moving on~
2012-2013 Year of Study: Last chance to train with Christianne Hirt and Joe-Norman Shaw in Calgary.

Company of Rogues Actors Studio continues to flourish in its’ 17th exciting year as Calgary's most respected independent training centre for actors at all stages of their development. Rogues’ Studio has been a vital creative voice in the Calgary community, both through classes and productions, since 1996. While over the years we’ve enjoyed our creative home and it continues to thrive, we feel it’s finally time to move on and pursue other creative opportunities. Therefore, Studio Directors, Christianne Hirt and Joe-Norman Shaw, are currently considering relocation options in Toronto or Vancouver following the 2012-2013 Year of Study. This decision comes after much soul searching and with a lot of gratitude for all the success and support the studio has garnered from the community over the years.

It's both with the sadness of leaving and the excitement of seeking new horizons that we’ve come to this transformative place. It is our hope that we have your support for our journey, as we also hope that we’ve been a support to yours. As for the future of Company of Rogues in Calgary and beyond, that is yet to be determined.

Therefore, the 2012-2013 Year of Study is the last year you will be able to study with Christianne and Joe in our Calgary studio. We look forward to this next year of fostering your artistic growth. To all Rogues’ students past and present, both Christianne and Joe are deeply grateful for having the opportunity to work with you and share in your creative journey. It’s our intention that the final year at Rogues is our most exciting, dynamic and successful.

Always look on the bright side of life

Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. This hilarious musical sticks close to the original legend*, but features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits, and French people.

FRC is proud to present one of the country’s first non-professional productions of Monty Python’s Spamalot! With numbers like â€Å“The Song That Goes Like This” and â€Å“Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”, this Tony Award winner for Best Musical will have you rolling in the aisles (and did we mention the bevy of beautiful show girls?)*No it doesn't.

We dine well here in Camelot, we eat ham and jam and spam a lot!
