Synopsis:
How To Give A Death Notification is a video produced specifically for law enforcement officers across Canada. The video will outline the proper way to perform a death notification utilizing three different scenarios. Scenario #1 outlines a death notification in the best case situation. Scenario #2 outlines how to go about giving a death notification to next of kin if they happen to show up at the scene of the death. Scenario #3 outlines the proper way to give out information in the case of a homicide. The video is largely a training piece utilizing real-life experiences and dramatic reenactments. This is a very important video and actors who succeed in filling roles should feel proud that they are helping future families receive potentially the worst news of their life in a dignified and professional way.

Roles:
SCENARIO #2
[Eleanor Adams] [Female] [AGE: 50-70]
Eleanor is a grandmother who has by come across a traffic accident by chance. She sees that the car involved belongs to her son, Derrick. The officer at the scene of the accident give Eleanor the worst news a mother can receive, her son has died. Her grandchild, a teenager, was also in the car but survived. Though the notification was done in the most respectful, correct way possible, Eleanor is understandably devastated and reacts accordingly.
[Grandchild] [Male or Female] [AGE: 12-17]
This role can be either male or female but must be a teenager. “Grandchild” was in the vehicle during the vehicular accident that claimed the life of their father. “Grandchild” is understandably shaken up and in shock. Their grandmother arrives at the scene of the accident and together they receive the news of the death of Derrick Adams (grandchild’s father and grandmother’s son) from a first responding officer.
[Officer #1] [Male] [AGE: 25 – 50]
First responding officer at the scene of a fatal traffic accident. The officer finds himself in a situation where the next of kin has arrived at the scene of the death. Before he is able to do all of the proper research that an officer would normally do to prepare for a death notification he must give the notification right then and there to the victim’s mother. This is of course a high stress scenario but the officer must remain calm and professional while giving out the worst news one might hear in their entire life. Because this is the role of a police officer, the actor who successfully fills this role will need to be clean shaven with a tidy haircut.
[Officer #2] [Male or Female] [AGE: 25 – 50]
Partner of Officer #2. This role is smaller with no lines. The actor who fills this role will be moral support to Officer #2 as well as the next of kin. Because this is the role of a police officer, the actor who successfully fills this role will need to be clean shaven with a tidy haircut/hair in a tight, low bun.

SCENARIO #3
[Officer] [Male or Female] [AGE: 30-50]
The scene takes place in front of an office building that has been blocked off to the public by police. There has been a homicide inside. The officer stands at the front of the building while confronting an upset husband. The husband demands to get inside to view the scene of the crime where his wife has been murdered. The officer calmly tries to inform the husband that because the office building is a crime scene, he can’t allow him inside as there is a chance he may contaminate evidence. The officer does the best he can with the information he is given to try to calm the husband and ensure him that they are doing the best job they can in order to find out what happened to the man’s wife. Because this is the role of a police officer, the actor who successfully fills this role will need to be clean shaven with a tidy haircut/hair in a tight, low bun.
[Husband] [Male] [AGE: 30 – 50]

The scene begins outside an office building. The husband’s wife is a victim of a homicide and he has just gotten the news. He walks up to an officer standing outside the entrance and demands to be let inside so he can see his wife’s body. Normally an officer would do the best they could to allow the family to see the body but because of evidentiary reasons, cannot let the husband inside. This upsets the husband. The officer does the best he can to reassure the husband the goal of the officers isn’t to upset him but to catch whoever has done this to his wife. The husband slowly begins to understand and calm down.
