2016-2017
Season Auditions for Birnton Theatricals
Birnton Theatricals is excited to announce the auditions for their 2016-2017 season production. Birnton Theatricals mandate is to produce theatre and offer educational programming that introduces kids and young adults to the power and magic of live theatre and drama. Our goal is to not only foster the development of beginning artists but also to excite a young generation into becoming life long patrons of the arts.
We have a variety of productions on the go this season so we thought we would do all the auditions at once.
Our productions include:
for the Crayon Series: 2 kids shows for Stage West for Kids, a show with the CPO
for the Mosaic Series: The Shape of Things by Neil Labute performed at Motel at Arts Commons.

Each project will be cast as a stand alone production although artists are welcome to audition for any or all of the projects.
Auditions for roles will take place:
Monday, September 19 and Tuesday, September 20 (7-10pm)

• Prepare
a musical theatre song for the audition
• Bring
your own accompaniment (playback available through headphone jack)
• One
comic or children's theatre monologue
• If
just interested in Shape of Things please prepare a contemporary monologue in
place of song.
• Please

• Actors must be over 18.

Note: Non-Equity Production. Payment will be on a per show basis with an honorarium for the rehearsal period.
Rehearsals will be part time and flexible starting approx 8-10 weeks prior to opening of each project and will take place at a TBD location. Rehearsals will take place mostly in the evenings and on weekends. The schedule will be created around artists' individual schedules.
Crayon Series
Christmas 2016
Production 1:
Twas The Night Before Christmas
Written and Directed by Chris Stockton
In co-production with Stage West for Kids
It's the night before Christmas and the Barr family have just returned home! In keeping with tradition, the family settles in to read Twas the Night Before Christmas. When the suggestion is made to copy the story exactly as possible, chaos ensues with the family realizing that the traditions we hold so dearly are strange but are rooted in love, family and the Christmas spirit.
Roles:
LEEANNE – A mother, she is a single mother helping to raise two children since their father is away overseas. She is loving but firm, fun but filled with common sense and tired from all of the holiday rush.
JACK - The son of the family and is your typical high energy young kid. He enjoys superheroes and loves his sister in spite of bugging her all the time. He is the Batman to her Robin and being the older sibling, he often takes control or has the final word.
JILL - The daughter in the family. She is the younger of the two children but that doesn't mean that she is not smart. She approaches life with wide eyed wonder and lots of energy. She doesn't understand boys – they're weird but that doesn't mean that she doesn't have a soft spot for her brother.
Note all performers have to be comfortable singing and being able to move (dance).

Spring 2017
Production 2:
Miriam and the Magical Musical Mood Machine
Written and Directed by Chris Stockton
In co-production with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra
Bella Concert Hall - Mount Royal University
Miriam's day is off to a rocky start until she discovers a mysterious small machine outside her house. Once she begins touching the buttons, a strange thing happens, the magical music that the machine plays begins effecting her emotions! But when the machine breaks and starts to cause the emotions of everyone around her to go crazy, Miriam is forced to choose between her family and her new found powers! A funny, musical romp through how music effects our emotions, this educational journey will interactively cover aspects of both the music and health curriculums.
Roles:
MIRIAM – A young spunky girl who is full of emotion. She could be misinterpreted as being sneaky but she is genuinely curious. A big presence in spite of her small size.
MOM – A very real world mother with a very practical way of dealing with things. She likes things neat, tidy and in their place. She always keeps her emotions in check until, well the machine takes control of her.
JAMIE – Miriam's best friend. Always suspect of Miriam's hidden agenda, everything stresses them out. They are a worrier and for good reason, they're often right. Jamie is, unfortunately, easily persuaded to not trust their gut instinct.

Production 3:
Rumplestiltskin
Written and Directed by Chris Stockton
In co-production with Stage West for Kids
Based on the traditional tale by the Brothers Grimm, this traditional telling of the story follows a young maiden named Alexandria who is locked in a tower when her father tells the king that she can spin straw into gold. Helped by a strange, anonymous stranger, she is able to turn the straw into gold three times, but not without a cost. When she may lose her first born child, she must guess the strangers name!
Roles:
ALEXANDRIA– A beautiful young woman who is bright, caring and hard working. She knows her limits though and is not afraid to negotiate a deal.
KING ARCHIBALD – A ruthless ruler who wants to marry Alexandria. He isn't afraid to call the bluff of her handmaiden who claims she can spin straw into gold.
OLGA – The handmaiden who is responsible for getting Alexandria into the mess of the spinning straw into gold. An old woman but not without a strong spirit and will to fix things.
RUMPLESTILTSKIN – (Puppet) – Peformed by the same actor as King Archibald – A creepy little creature who is selfish, sneaky and manipulative. He does happen to have the ability to spin straw into gold.
